Sustainable Paper
Our virgin paper is certified as being a sustainable product by either the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). By choosing this paper, we are contributing to planting more trees.
Recycled Paper
Paper can be made completely from recycled fibres (100% recycled) or from a mix of recycled fibres combined with fibres from new wood. By choosing recycled paper, we are giving this material a second lease of life.
Eco ink
We print with environmentally-friendly toner which requires a lower fusing temperature, saving power, uses biomass (plant material) as one of the ingredients, is 100% food safe, and received top results in the INGEDE deinking tests, meaning it is easily recycled.
Plastic-free Packaging
We use recycled and/or recyclable cardboard boxes, materials and paper products, including paper tape, resulting in 100% plastic free packaging. We also try to reuse as much packaging as we can, thereby minimising our consumption.
Product Passport
We created the 'product passport' which is provided with each order/product. This small card highlights the planet positive choices you make by choosing The FACTORY, which is recognised by our merit stamp system. It also allows our production processes, materials used and second-life options to be more transparent.
Electric Delivery
Where direct delivery is required, the company uses its own electric vehicle. This is charged using our own self-generated green energy. This is produced on-site by solar panels and a wind turbine. Note that some smaller local packages are delivered by bicycle, weather permitting!
Solar Energy
We have invested in 20 kW+ of PV solar panels, which were installed on the roof of our building in 2020. This will help reduce our carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 10 tonnes per year. This will meet the majority of our electricity needs in combination with the power generated from our wind turbine.
Wind Energy
After years of planning The FACTORY installed its own 2.4 kW wind turbine in April 2021. This is an important milestone on The FACTORYs path to becoming carbon neutral and ultimately carbon negative.
Biodiversity
Five acres of open land is being managed professionally to enhance biodiversity. The idea is to protect and encourage plant and animal life, including pollinators such as bees and butterflies, that might otherwise be endangered. A young fruit tree orchard and wildflowers are also present with plans to increase the number of trees over the coming years.
Carbon Balanced Paper
All of our paper is now Carbon Balanced. This is where the average carbon impact for paper production has been balanced, or offset, by the World Land Trust through the preservation of high conservation forests, saving threatened habitats and their biodiversity. Carbon Balanced Paper helps us reduce the carbon impacts of our paper and printed communications, reducing our carbon footprint and impacts on the climate.
Wellness
Wellness is an integral part of how we work. We have introduced a four day work week which helps promote a healthy work–life balance for our team. An optional morning yoga class is also provided once a week with a local yoga instructor. It is an important pillar of any holistic/sustainable business to care for the health and wellbeing of its staff.
Social Responsibility
The FACTORY believes that business must benefit society. We do this by sharing our sustainability journey in the hope that it will inspire others to make positive change. We also offer our services pro bono or heavily discounted to charitable organisation who are passionate about change for the greater good.
